Scott Shreve, D.O.

National Director of Hospice and Palliative Care, Department of Veteran Affairs

Dr. Shreve is the National Director of Hospice and Palliative Care for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He is responsible for all policy, program development, staff education and quality assurance for palliative and hospice care provided or purchased for enrolled Veterans. Dr. Shreve led the implementation and oversight of the Comprehensive End-of-Life Care Initiative from 2009 to 2012 to change the culture of care for Veterans with serious illness and to ensure reliable access to quality palliative care. As part of this initiative, VA collaborated with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization to establish the We Honor Veterans program which has engaged more than 3,500 community hospices in improved care for Veterans at end of life. In 2013, VA’s Hospice and Palliative Care Program received the American Hospital Association’s Circle of Life Citation of Honor Award. Clinically, Dr. Shreve commits half of his time to front line care of Veterans as the Medical Director and teaching attending 12 months per year at a VA 17 bed inpatient hospice unit in Central Pennsylvania. Dr. Shreve is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in Penn State’s College of Medicine. Recognition of his efforts includes; Pennsylvania American Legion’s 2018 Distinguished Service Award Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Penn State University, 2018 Named one of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine Visionaries, 2018 Department of Veterans Affairs’ Mark Wolcott Award for excellence in clinical leadership to enhance the quality of direct patient care delivery in 2017 Penn State’s Internal Medicine Distinguished Teaching Award in 2007, 2009 and 2017 Palliative Medicine Community Leadership Award from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine in 2013 Dr. Shreve is a Fellowship trained Geriatrician and has board certifications in Internal Medicine and Palliative Medicine. Prior to medical school, Scott was a corporate banker.
